You may have heard the story of James Fulton Engstrom, whose story of healing astounded people across the world. At birth, James was stillborn and without a pulse for 61 minutes. Just as the doctors were prepared to call his time of death, his heart miraculously started beating and in the following months he made a full and inexplicable recovery. This miracle was formally attributed to Venerable Fulton Sheen this year, and his beatification was scheduled to take place in Peoria on December 21, 2019.
When news broke on December 3 that Sheen’s beatification Mass had been postponed, many Catholics were shocked and confused. Bonnie Engstrom, mother of James Fulton, joined The Miracle Hunter® to share her reaction to the latest developments in Sheen’s cause for sainthood.
She recalled hearing that Sheen’s December 21 beatification had been cancelled: “In the initial moment that I heard, it was a bit of a sucker-punch and it kind of took my breath away and I didn’t know what to say. But the longer I thought about it, you know, God’s in control and I don’t know what he’s doing, I don’t know what’s going on. It’s a mystery to me but I trust in Jesus. And I have seen him over and over again make beautiful things come out of situations that I thought were just totally frustrating or upsetting and then on the other side I see the glorious work that God does. It’s always better than what I had planned, so I am just trusting.”
Engstrom has been fasting for this situation to be resolved and the beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen to move forward. She encourages everyone to hold onto hope and trust that things will work out.
“I trust in Jesus and I choose to have joy that everything will work out, so in the end it will just be undeniable if it wasn’t undeniable already. I’m standing here with my nine-year-old son who was dead for an hour and it was the power of Fulton Sheen’s prayers that brought him back to life through Jesus Christ. I know that Fulton Sheen is a saint. But I think at the end of this everyone will be so certain that he is a saint. So for the glory of God and the good of his Church I am choosing to focus on that and to trust. And I would encourage everyone else to do that, too,” said Engstrom.
