  • Optional Memorial of St. Callistus I; originally a slave in charge of the bank, but lost money to be deposited; after serving time, he was arrested for brawling in a synagogue, and condemned to work in the mines of Sardinia; after his release, he became superintendent of the Christian burial ground in Rome, still called the “Cemetery of St. Callistus”; elected pope, but was opposed by St. Hippolytus, the first antipope; Callistus was martyred during a local disturbance in Rome, in 222 A.D.
