- Saint of the Day: St. Joseph the Hymnographer, 810-886; a native of Sicily, he fled to Thessalonica to avoid an attack by the Arabs, then to Constantinople; he fled Constantinople because of the iconoclast persecution; on his way to Rome, he was captured and made a slave in Crete; after escaping, he returned to Constantinople and founded a monastery; he was the most prolific of the Greek hymn-writers
