Have you ever made a good decision and then been tempted to stray from it? Congratulations – you’re human!
The good news is that the lives of the saints show us that God is constantly calling us back to His mercy.
St. Margaret Mary had already felt a call to religious life, but that didn’t mean temptation disappeared. In her autobiography, she admits she was drawn back into village life. She danced at Carnival. She wore common clothes like everyone else. She just blended into the world she left years before.
Her conviction and commitment to her faith was starting to fade away. Temptation doesn’t always come as something bad. Often it is simply a temptation to focus on other things instead of our faith.
But God kept on calling St. Margaret Mary to Himself.
One night in the 1660s, she returned home from a ball where she had been dancing when she saw Jesus. She encountered a vision of Jesus Christ during His passion. Jesus was showing His wounded heart to her – His Sacred Heart. Jesus Christ reminded her of her promise to consecrate herself to Mary and become a nun.
This vision renewed her determination to fulfill her childhood vow. No longer would she be distracted by family persuasion or worldly entertainment.
How often are we distracted by the world? Our jobs? Or our attempts to impress others?
Spiritual growth isn’t one big decision, it’s thousands of small ones.
