Rosary Novena Day 36: Want to Know How to Brag?

Did you know that we almost didn’t get the detailed autobiography of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque?

St. Margaret Mary was a very humble person. That humility allowed her to accomplish many spiritual feats in her life. But when her spiritual director Fr. Claude La Colombière asked her to write down an account of her life, she didn’t want to!

In fact, when previous spiritual directors had told her to write down the visions, she would write it down out of obedience and then burn it before anyone could see it! She was worried that writing these down would tempt her to pride. It was only when she was ordered under obedience to write and preserve the visions that she did.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque saw herself in humility. She knew that she was selfish and sinful and did not want to draw attention to herself. But through her self-knowledge and humility, she was able to draw people to Christ!

What a witness St. Margaret Mary Alacoque is for us today! In our world of social media, selfies, and advertising, how often do we understand our ‘littleness’? How often are we aware that Jesus’ love for us has nothing to do with our popularity or accomplishments? He loves us because we are His and He has made us good.

If we are ever worried about bragging or about pride, let us follow St. Margaret Mary’s example: let’s boast about how great Jesus is! We can brag all day long about how merciful and wonderful God’s love is without ever becoming prideful.
