The Story of Relevant Radio
Ever since Jesus Christ sent his Apostles out into the whole world to preach the Good News, to make disciples of all nations, and to baptize in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, (Mt 28:19-20) faithful Christians have taken the initiative to respond to this call according to their means and circumstances. When St. John Paul II was elected Roman Pontiff on October 16, 1978 his first words to the world were, “Praised be Jesus Christ! Do not be afraid.” That great saint inspired many men and women with his words and example, his piety and devotion, his courage and perseverance. Saint John Paul II invited all of us to join him in the New Evangelization to bring Christ and his Good News into the Third Millennium.
St. John Paul’s “Do not be afraid” challenge launched an exciting chapter of the New Evangelization in America. On August 15, 2000, John Cavil of Green Bay, Wisconsin filed a document with the IRS for tax-exempt status for “Christ the King Communications, Inc.”, which would later become “Relevant Radio.” Assisted by local Catholic entrepreneur Mark Follett and community banker Bob Atwell, Relevant Radio broadcast for the first time on WJOK 1050 AM from Green Bay, Wisconsin on Sunday, November 26. Fittingly, the first broadcast was the Mass for the Solemnity of Christ the King from the Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier, one of the greatest Apostles and Evangelists in the history of the Church. Two weeks later, the FCC granted Relevant Radio its first license, on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization. Relevant Radio was born.
Over the next several years, through the extraordinary generosity of the founders and patrons, Relevant Radio expanded throughout the Midwest to Chicago, St. Paul-Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and points in between. On September 1, 2009, at the prompting of Francis Cardinal George, then President of the USCCB, Rev. Francis J. Hoffman joined Relevant Radio full time, and since 2010 he has led the organization as CEO and Executive Director, along with the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Thomas Vorpahl.
Under Fr. Hoffman’s leadership, Relevant Radio has grown from a financially struggling regional network reaching twenty million persons, to a thriving national network now reaching 227,000,000 persons in the USA on a network of 180+ AM/FM stations in 37 of the top 50 markets, and reaching 17MM persons on the “Relevant Radio en Espanol” network which launched in 2019. Along the way, Relevant Radio merged with and acquired the assets of Real Life Radio in Lexington, KY August 31, 2016, Immaculate Heart Radio on the West Coast on July 3, 2017, Presence Radio in Maine on August 1, 2018, Queen of Peace Radio in Jacksonville, FL September 23, 2019, and the Baraga Catholic Radio Network in Michigan December 11, 2019.

The strength of Relevant Radio lies not only in our ability to reach others through our many platforms, but also in the unique content we have created through the years. Our legacy programs are among the longest-running broadcasts in all of Catholic media, including Morning Air™ which premiered in 2003 and The Drew Mariani Show™ which first aired in 2004. Relevant Radio host, Patrick Madrid, has established a large, growing and devoted listenership across the country through his popular daytime program each day. Through the years, Relevant Radio has also created new and innovative programs like The Family Rosary Across America, the only live and interactive rosary multi-media broadcast in the country and The Inner Life, a one-of –a-kind show devoted entirely to topics of spiritual direction and prayer, now in its second decade.
The Mission of Relevant Radio is to “Bring Christ to the world through the media” and operates according to three Guiding Principles: 1. Faithful to the Magisterium and the Catechism of the Catholic Church; 2. United to the Bishops; 3. Under the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The network produces a variety of popular and exciting programs to help strengthen the family, solve everyday problems, and raise the heart and mind to God.
Relevant Radio is governed by a Board of Directors made up of seventeen men and women and clergy and bishops, while twenty five Cardinals and Bishops serve on the Episcopal Advisory Council.
In addition to the extraordinary dedication and commitment of our Associates, Listeners, Benefactors and Board of Directors, Relevant Radio credits its astonishing growth and effectiveness to the power of prayer and fidelity to Christ. The powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph have made all the difference. Since 2007, the Most Blessed Sacrament has been reserved in the Chapel of the Nativity for daily adoration and Mass and recently for the Family Rosary Across America. Relevant Radio has been consecrated to Jesus, Mary and Joseph over the years with great joy.
