Pope Leo Receives an Eagles Super Bowl Cap and a Pizza

John Morales and Glen Lewerenz brought listeners a wonderfully unpredictable story out of Rome this week. It somehow managed to cover the Vatican, the NFL, and deep-dish pizza all in one breath.

A group known as the Philly Pilgrims of Hope landed in the Eternal City, and they didn’t come empty-handed. Led by Archbishop Nelson Pérez, the pilgrims presented Pope Leo XIV with a very special gift: a Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl cap. That’s right. The Vicar of Christ now has some Kelly green NFL gear in his wardrobe.

To really appreciate how perfect this moment is, you have to remember what happened just days earlier. A group of Chicago Bears fans had also paid a visit to the Holy Father. Their gift? A shirt that read “Da Pope,” in true Chicago style, paying homage to the legendary “Da Bears” sketch from Saturday Night Live.

NFL merch being passed around at the Vatican, fans from both teams making their papal pitch, and a pope with well-known Chicago roots caught in the middle. The Bears and the Eagles are scheduled to face off the day after Thanksgiving.

And then came the pizza.

During his Wednesday general audience, Pope Leo received yet another surprise from the Windy City: a classic deep-dish pizza delivered right to him in the Vatican. Because when you’ve got sports on your mind, why not add a slice of Chicago’s finest to the mix?

The delivery wasn’t just a gimmick. It was a moment that tied the whole week together. From football hats to novelty T-shirts to authentic comfort food, this was a week where the joy of being Catholic collided with the fun of human culture. And somehow, it all felt fitting.

As for whether Pope Leo actually wore the Eagles hat, the jury’s still out. But if his past tells us anything, it’s more likely his loyalties remain with the Bears and the White Sox. You can take the man out of the South Side, but you can’t take the South Side out of the man.

Glen Lewerenz wrapped it all up with a dream of his own. He wants a plaque at his favorite pizza place that reads, “Glen ate pizza here.” If we’ve learned anything from this story, it’s that dreams—even wildly random ones—aren’t as far-fetched as they seem.

So here’s to papal baseball caps, pizza in the piazza, and a Church that knows how to celebrate the little things.
