Yesterday Charlie Kirk was assassinated.
We all know why. Because he spoke the Truth. And that irritated moral relativists who want to create their own truth.
Two thousand years ago, John the Baptist was beheaded.
We all know why. Because he spoke the truth. And that irritated Herodias.
Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ was crucified.
We all know why. Because he spoke the Truth. And that irritated the High Priests.
Throughout history, Prophets and all who speak the Truth are frequently targets of attack.
And so today, while we pray for the repose of the soul of Charlie Kirk and for his wife and children, we should also pray that those who speak the Truth continue to be courageous and speak and teach the Truth which comes from Jesus Christ.
As St. Paul said, “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel.”
24 years ago today, terrorists attacked our country and flew passenger jets into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, DC, displaying their hatred for the United States. More than 3,000 innocent and defenseless Americans died that day. We were shocked and all of us remember exactly where we were when we heard the news. Many First Responders – police and fire and emergency personnel and even priests – died as they tried to help. WE are proud of them and will never forget them, as we continue to pray for the repose of their souls and for the survivors in their families. That is why our flags fly at half- mast today. And also for Charlie Kirk.
That same day, 9/11, 3,500 unborn children in America lost their lives through abortion. And that happened the next day too…and every day for the rest of the year. Let us never forget them.
Violence, murder and strife have been with us since the beginning of the human race, since Cain killed Abel out of envy.
At the heart of violence and rage is sadness in the human heart – people who are sad because they don’t get what they want. And they feel sorry for themselves. And so in their heart they say, “No one is going to tell me what to do. No one is going to tell me what to think. I can do and think and be whatever I want.” And that is true to an extent: human beings are free to choose their actions. But we are not free to choose the consequences of those actions. We are limited. We are not God. We are not all powerful.
You can think you are a bird. You can identify as a bird. But if you jump off a skyscraper on a beautiful day like today and pretend to fly, the power of gravity will put an end to that delusion. Reality is unforgiving.
The only way to find peace and happiness and joy in this world is to submit to Jesus Christ and worship him.
It all comes down to that. Will we worship Jesus Christ, or worship ourselves?
As Joshua said: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
