Strength in Suffering: A Journey Through Prostate Cancer (Morning Air)

John Morales opens his heart to you and shares something he had kept private for nearly a year – his journey through prostate cancer. It began with what seemed like a routine physical, only to discover elevated PSA levels and, eventually, a December diagnosis that no one is ever ready to hear. John describes the difficult decisions between surgery and radiation, the long days of treatment, and the unexpected trial of shingles that followed.

Through it all, he leaned on his faith: hours before the Blessed Sacrament, prayers whispered during radiation sessions, and constant reliance on Our Lord, Our Lady, and the saints. He credits the prayers of colleagues like Father Rocky and Drew Mariani, as well as the quiet strength of his family, for helping him walk forward with courage. Even while in pain, he found joy in small graces – like watching his son’s final season of high school baseball and still showing up on-air each morning with hope in his voice.

As September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, John offers his story as both a warning and an encouragement: don’t delay getting checked. A simple screening can save a life. And when suffering does come, it can be carried – through prayer, through community, and above all through trust in Christ, who transforms every cross into grace.
