In September, Cardinal Blase Cupich announced that the Archdiocese of Chicago would be giving a Senator Dick Durbin a lifetime achievement award at their Keep Hope Alive celebration on November 3rd. Cardinal Cupich stated that the award was being presented to Senator Durbin for his work in immigration, but many responded by pointing out that he also has a long history of supporting legislation protecting abortion.
After this announcement, Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the diocese of Springfield responded, stating that this decision to present an award to Senator Durbin risked causing grave scandal and confusing the faithful about the Church’s unwavering stance to honor, protect, and defend the sanctity and dignity of all human life.
Senator Durbin ultimately declined to receive the award. Bishop Paprocki responded with another statement, expressing his gratitude that Senator Durbin had chosen to decline the award. He also asked the faithful to pray for the church and for the protection of all human life, including the unborn and immigrants.
On October 6th, Bishop Paprocki released a video summarizing the situation. He also clarified that the Church calls us to respect the dignity of all people and explained the difference between the intrinsic evil of infanticide and abortion, and the prudential judgment required when enforcing immigration laws.
