Did Jesus Heal Mental Illness? (Father Simon Says)

In this podcast episode of Father Simon Says, a listener named Stan from Burbank asks a question you might have wondered: Why doesn’t Scripture ever mention Jesus healing someone with mental illness? Fr. Simon approaches the topic with compassion and insight, explaining that while the Gospels don’t describe mental illness in modern terms, the effects of sin, suffering, and even demonic influence are deeply intertwined with the brokenness of all creation.

He notes that not every illness – mental or physical – is caused by demons, yet all disorder in the world ultimately stems from humanity’s fall. Father reflects that Jesus did heal the mind and heart by calling people to repentance and discipleship, giving them meaning, direction, and purpose – a healing deeper than physical cure. Some mental suffering, he says, can stem from biochemical imbalance, some from moral or emotional wounds, and some from the spiritual battle that touches every human soul.

Fr. Simon reminds you that following Christ offers a kind of interior healing the world cannot give – a renewal of purpose that brings sanity to the soul and peace to the heart.
