Is There Such a Thing as Catholic AI? (The Patrick Madrid Show)

Patrick Madrid has been receiving many emails about “Catholic AI” apps, but he starts with a surprising clarification: “There is no such thing, per se, as a Catholic AI.”

Mass‑market engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok are off-the-rack tools. What makes some of them feel Catholic, Patrick explains, is the way people set the rules. You can tell AI to remember your preferences — no profanity, no morally objectionable content, avoid overused words like “guidance,” format answers a certain way — and it will try to stay within those guardrails.

That’s essentially what many Catholic‑branded apps are doing. A group or apostolate can set parameters: give pride of place to the Catholic Encyclopedia, certain Bible translations, or the Church Fathers; add Scripture verses or links to their website; present answers in a particular style. Patrick is quick to stress he’s not knocking this work. On the contrary, he’s glad to see Catholic groups harness powerful engines to bring people well‑curated information.

Still, as producer Cyrus wryly adds, AI has limits, especially when souls are on the line. “Don’t ask a robot. Call. Call Patrick. Call someone who actually cares about your eternal soul.” Patrick agrees: at Relevant Radio, we really do.
