Daycare, Attachment, and the Needs of Young Children (The Drew Mariani Show)

For many parents, the daycare decision is not simple. It is often shaped by financial pressure, work demands, and a sincere desire to do what is best for their children. On The Drew Mariani Show, Drew opened up that difficult conversation with pediatrician and author Dr. Meg Meeker, asking not what is easiest, but what children truly need.

Drew acknowledged why so many families rely on childcare. With millions of young children in some form of weekly care, daycare has become part of everyday American life. But he also made clear that this conversation is “not about guilt,” but about “truth” and “love.”

Dr. Meeker stressed that the earliest years of life are especially important for attachment, particularly between a child and mother. While she noted that some daycares can be beneficial, especially when they are small, warm, and attentive, she urged parents to weigh the decision carefully. In her words, “we need to really prioritize attachment for kids in those early years.”

She also pointed to practical concerns. Children in daycare are often exposed to more illness, and larger child-to-worker ratios can make it harder for a child to receive the care and affection he or she needs. At the same time, Dr. Meeker recognized that some parents have no choice and emphasized that this is “a very individual decision.”

Her key point was simple: when parents are able, they should protect time with their children and give serious attention to the bonds formed in those first years. Love, presence, and secure attachment matter deeply.
