We know that each of us has a guardian angel, but what about the Son of God? Peter called Father Simon SaysTM with this fascinating question: “Jesus being both God and Man, did he have a guardian angel?”
“Yes! Fact is, he had a number of them,” answered Fr. Richard Simon. He pointed to several places in Scripture where angels cared for Jesus.
“You see what happened in the Garden of Gethsemane? The angels came and ministered to him,” said Fr. Simon.
After withdrawing about a stone’s throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.” And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. – Luke 22:41-43
Here are some more verses that reference Jesus and the angels:
Temptation in the desert; “Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.” – Matthew 4:11
Arrest of Jesus; “Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels?” – Matthew 26:53
“I’m not sure who got that privilege, which angel,” laughed Fr. Simon. “But and he said, ‘I can summon legions of angels.’ Yes, the angels never took their eyes off him.”
“And remember, the purpose of an angel isn’t to help us win the lottery or get us out of that traffic accident, the purpose of the angel is to get us to heaven. … But yes, I would say Jesus had guardian angels.”
Guardian Angel Prayer
Angel of God, My guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day (night)
Be at my side,
To light and guard,
To rule and guide,
Amen.
