The Thread Connecting Sunday to Sunday

For Catholics, our faith is not simply an idea or a set of principles, it is a relationship. In fact, Scripture frequently uses the imagery of a bride and bridegroom to show the relationship between Christ and his Church. But if your spouse only talked to you one day a week (say, on Sunday) you would probably not consider that to be a great relationship.

Even church-going Catholics can fall into the habit of making Sunday Mass the beginning and the end of their life of faith. But to do so is to miss out on the powerful, intimate, life-giving relationship that the Lord wants to have with you.

A listener named Dan recently called in to The Inner Life® to share how he used to relegate his faith to Sunday mornings only, but once he started listening to Relevant Radio® all of that changed.

Dan said, “I am very thankful and grateful for God bringing Relevant Radio into my life. Seven years ago I was driving, flipping through the channels, and I heard Relevant Radio. I pulled off the interstate to find the station, I set it, I drove to work and found it on my work radio. And I’ve been listening all the time since.”

Dan shared that before he started listening to Relevant Radio, he would go to Sunday Mass, but something was still missing. He compared his faith life to Swiss cheese. Sunday Mass was the cheese part, but there were still holes in it.

“Relevant Radio, for me, fills in all of those holes throughout the workweek,” he said. “And when somebody asks me why I am Catholic I can now tell them why. Instead of just being baptized because my parents did it, I am Catholic because of the Eucharist and the sacraments. Because of Relevant Radio I understand my faith instead of just being Catholic because I’m baptized.”

Dan told spiritual director Fr. Tom Wilson that thanks to Relevant Radio his time home from work during quarantine was a time he was able to grow closer to the Lord.

He said, “During that period of time I was able to listen to Fr. Rocky, the Mass, listen to Drew every afternoon. But then I also started listening to Father Rocky for the Rosary. I was doing all three of those during the day, and I know that all of that brought me closer to God.”

Fr. Tom Wilson thanked Dan for his testimony, and added, “I think you point out something very important in our life of faith. And maybe the separation, anxiety, and confusion caused by the pandemic can re-emphasize the importance of having threads that connect Sunday to Sunday.”

“The truth is we need to be linked and connected to God and each other not just on Sunday, but every day,” Fr. Tom pointed out. “And your witness allows us to remember that our faith isn’t just for Sunday. Our faith isn’t just for special occasions. But our faith is for all the time, and it’s apostolates like Relevant Radio that provide that thread between Sundays. So thank you very much for sharing.”
