The Dangers of Psychics, Mediums, and Tarot Readers

Fortune-tellers of all stripes are having a resurgence in recent years. Psychics, mediums, and tarot cards are no longer seen as fringe outliers, but as mainstream entertainers. And although visiting a psychic may seem harmless and fun, it can lead you down some supernatural roads that are dangerous for your soul.

Susan Brinkman, author of the new book Fight Like a Catholic: Spiritual Warfare in the Catholic Traditionstopped by The Drew Mariani Show™ recently to explain the dangers of these occult practices, and she and Drew discussed their own experiences of how damaging it can be to see a psychic.

“Any time you consort with powers that are not sourced in God you are in very dangerous territory,” Susan said. “There’s no other way to put it. It’s very, very dangerous. You are now consorting with the evil one or with different instruments that he uses to bring these things about.”

Pointing to Scripture, Susan explained that while God has facilitated communication between the living and the dead before, those who claim to have special gifts or powers to communicate with the dead are not working in union with the Lord.

“God tells us in Deuteronomy 18:10, he calls people who conjure the dead an abomination,” she said. “God doesn’t contradict himself, so there’s no way he’s going to appear to the Long Island Medium for the sake of a television series that she’s involved in. It’s just not going to happen. He’s not going to do that.”

But you may be asking yourself what harm can really come from seeing a psychic or having your tarot cards read? Susan drew from her own experience to illustrate how the devil uses psychics and mediums to turn us away from the Lord.

“I went to a psychic many, many years ago before I returned to the Church,” she recalled. “And she told me that in my middle age I would be on television. I thought, ‘What is she talking about?’ I wasn’t even a published author at that point. But when I was 55 years old or so I started going on TV. And that always bothered me. How did she know that?”

“I thought, ‘Wow, maybe she’s really got something here. This is true. She knows something.’ You think that this person has some sort of special power, and that’s exactly what Satan is trying to do. He’s trying to get you to go there when you need help, not go to God. Those are the temptations, and he’s very successful at that.”

Drew shared a story from his own life, sharing that before their marriage his wife went with some friends to have her tarot cards read, and received a fortune that she knew was not of God.

“The psychic or medium or whoever was reading her cards told her not to marry me,” he said. “That’s how clever Satan is. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me, she’s made me a better man, we were meant to be together, and I think I’ve helped draw her closer to the Lord. We have 5 beautiful children. And I just think of how different the world would be if she made the decision to listen to that deceptive spirit.”

“That’s why you’ve got to be careful about taking advice from these total strangers,” Drew cautioned. “Because it’s not in your best interest. It’s quite often to your detriment.”
