Are you confused about God’s will? Trying to figure out the next step?
You’re not alone, and you don’t need to be stuck in your head.
Patrick Conley chats with Fr. Chris Walsh about the art of effective discernment. They look at St. Ignatius of Loyola’s wisdom on discerning spirits—determining whether inner voices are from God, us, or the enemy. Here are the golden nuggets from their conversation: Get the full episode here!
1. Write It Down! 📝
Discern Between Two Good Things: Start by jotting down the pros and cons of each option. Remember, you can only discern between two good choices—not between good and evil.
2. Sit With It & Pray 🕊️
Reflection Time: Let your list simmer for a few days. Pray over it and ask God for guidance. If a sense of peace fills your heart, you’re likely on the right path.
3. Seek Advice
Be Your Own Friend: Imagine giving advice to a friend in your situation. Often, we’re wiser for others than for ourselves. Consult Trusted Voices: Share your list with a spiritual director, a companion in faith, or a trusted friend. Their perspective can illuminate your discernment process.
Fr. Chris Walsh jokes that discernment isn’t about telling God your plans and expecting a miraculous intervention if they’re wrong. Instead, it’s about intentional prayer, reflection, and seeking wise counsel.
