Bishop Robert Barron: Living Poverty, Chastity and Obedience as Lay People

Bishop Robert Barron is a great admirer of Dorothy Day, the fiery activist who fought for social justice and worker’s rights in the 20th century. Day was a Catholic convert and a champion of social justice and equality, so unsurprisingly, something that Day couldn’t stand were the separate tiers of spirituality that seemed to be so prevalent throughout the Church of her time.

She was deeply against the idea that the clergy would live according to counseled spirituality (the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience), and that the laity would live according to the Ten Commandments, the basics.

No.

We, too, are called to live a counseled spirituality in our daily lives out in the world. Perhaps those counsels take different forms than they do for the clergy and the religious, but they should be present in the lives of the laity nonetheless.
