Dr. Edward Sri: We Are Not Worthy

Before we receive communion at Mass, there are a couple of guidelines that the Church gives us to make sure that we are not committing sacrilege when we receive Our Lord:

  1. Be in the state of grace.
  2. Fast for at least one hour before receiving Our Lord.

But even if we adhere to these guidelines, does that make us “worthy” of receiving Him? Never! We are but lowly, faulted, sinful creatures who have been given a gift, the gift of Jesus Christ Himself. “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed”. (Matthew 8:8)

Dr. Edward Sri spoke about our unworthiness, becoming tabernacles for Our Lord, and doing Thanksgiving on Saturday morning of the National Eucharistic Congress.
