Gloria Purvis on Embracing Unity and Combatting Disunity in the Church

Gloria Purvis, scholar, speaker, author, and activist spoke to the National Eucharistic Congress about embracing unity and battling disunity in the Church in a few different ways:

Signs of Unity

  1. We are made in God’s image. The human race is one human family.
  2. At Mass, we do everything in union.
  3. We have one head of the Church, the Pope.
  4. The Communion of Saints is made up of the Church Militant, the Church Suffering, and the Church Triumphant.

Signs of Disunity

  1. Rejection of the Pope’s authority. “Go see the current Peter in his current suffering. He needs our prayers.”
  2. Preference for Idols of Temporal Power. Allegiance to Christ is paramount to allegiance to political party. “No matter how is in the White House, the governor’s house, or the mayor’s house, Jesus Christ is always on the throne. Remember that!”
  3. Racism. We are all made in God’s image and likeness and are commanded to love one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, no matter our race.
