Is Motherhood a Free Ticket to Heaven? : Understanding St. Paul’s Writing (Father Simon Says)

Joanna calls in on this clip of Father Simon Says, and she and her husband are in this hilarious back-and-forth about a little Bible verse that seems to say women will be saved by childbirth. Joanna’s like, “Wait a second, that can’t mean every woman automatically goes to heaven just because she had kids, right?” Spoiler alert: she’s right! 🎉

Fr. Simon swoops in with a “Don’t tell your husband, but St. Paul agrees with you” response. 🫢 St. Paul didn’t mean that all women get a free ticket to heaven through childbirth. The verse in 1 Timothy 2:15 says women will be saved through childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness. So, being a mom doesn’t mean instant sainthood, but it’s a path to holiness, especially when lived out in faith.

Fr. Simon also points out that spiritual motherhood (like being a stepmom or mentor) counts just as much. Motherhood, in all its messy glory (kicking, screaming babies included! 😅), is a holy and salvific task. The idea that women are somehow less because of childbirth? No way! In fact, St. Paul is elevating it, saying it’s something holy and precious. 🙌

So, while Joanna’s husband might think this means all women are automatically saved through childbirth, Fr. Simon clarifies that salvation is tied to how we live out our faith, whether as mothers or not.

God bless, Joanna! You nailed it.
