How do you know if you’re doing enough?
Sometimes we can worry that we are not a “holy enough” Catholic. We feel distant from Jesus and others. Not knowing what to do, we can become anxious about our faith.
If you’ve ever worried whether you are ‘doing enough,’ you’re not alone.
Some saints felt that, too. Even before her profession, St. Margaret Mary feared that she was “not capable of acquiring the spirit” of her convent. But she persevered and professed her vows, knowing that’s what the Lord asked her to do.
After taking her final vows in 1672, she still felt misunderstood by her sisters and spent hours in the chapel. She was discouraged by spiritual dryness and felt unworthy. But she kept showing up to serve her sisters and the Lord, scrubbing floors, cleaning sheets, and kneeling in silence.
Don’t forget, Jesus knows we’re not perfect. He is patient and merciful, knowing our Earthly journey is a long one. That’s why, in the Seventh Promise of the Sacred Heart, Jesus offered help to anyone who honors His Sacred Heart:
Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
If your heart is sincere and you truly seek Him, Jesus will help you grow in holiness! And He promises to do it quickly.
So start simple. Make sure a Sacred Heart image is visible somewhere in your home. Maybe next to your coffee maker or on the nightstand. Every time you see it, say: “Jesus, I give you today. I entrust myself to Your Sacred Heart.” He’ll take that small act and run with it. That’s what He promised.
