What’s the first rule when you hike in the wilderness? Don’t go alone!
If you hike alone you could get lost – and if you get injured you won’t have anyone to help you. That’s why you should always bring a partner if you go hiking.
It’s the same in the spiritual life. You aren’t supposed to do it all on your own! In fact, it says in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “No one can believe alone, just as no one can live alone. You have not given yourself faith as you have not given yourself life. […] I cannot believe without being carried by the faith of others, and by my faith I help support others in the faith.” (CCC #166)
Jesus gave us an example for this! He had his 12 closest friends (the Apostles) with Him every step of the way during His earthly ministry. It’s the same with the saints. They often have friends or mentors who help them grow in faith. Saint Margaret Mary had her spiritual director, Fr. Claude La Colombière to help her understand and discern all her visions of the Sacred Heart. And Fr. Claude then spread the devotion to others! If the saints needed others, you probably do, too.
And you’re learning a great way to grow in friendship with Our Lord: the Sacred Heart devotion. By displaying an image of the Sacred Heart, you are pausing and acknowledging your need for God’s providence.
