Have you ever lost your patience at something small?
If you’re like me, I’m sure you have. Afterwards, we look back and wonder how we ever got frustrated at something like that!
Nowadays, we all expect everything to be instant. Whether it’s live news, two-day shipping, or fast food, we can get frustrated when things aren’t delivered immediately. But that’s not how true progress happens.
When it comes to real spiritual growth, it’s the slow, gradual growth that changes us forever. Remember Jesus’ parable of the sowing of the seed. (Matthew 13:1-23) It was the seed that took root that flourished, not the fast-growing seed that sprouted quickly!
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque knew this firsthand. As a child, she was bedridden for four years, unable to walk, play, or even go to Mass. Then, she had to be patient when she couldn’t immediately pursue her vocation. She had to be patient with her mother who wanted her to get married. Even after entering the convent, she waited years for anyone to believe her visions were real. Can you imagine how frustrating that would be?
What helped her? She didn’t pretend things were easy. She poured out her heart to Jesus and told Him exactly how she felt. Then she added something simple: “Jesus, I trust You. I will wait on Your time, not mine.”
That’s the real secret to patience: trusting trusting that God’s timing is perfect, even if we can’t understand it right now. And God keeps His promises, so our trust will never be wasted!
