Can you do something nine times in a row?
Most likely you’ll immediately say, “Yes! That’s easy!” But if you’re anything like me, you’ll realize it’s harder than it sounds. It’s very easy to start a nine-day novena – it’s much harder to finish it! And just try to get up early nine times in a row! The snooze button is hard to resist.
But that’s precisely what Jesus asked of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (and us!) in the First Fridays Devotion. St. Margaret Mary tells us that Jesus spoke to her during Mass, saying:
“I promise you […] all those who receive Holy Communion on nine first Fridays of consecutive months […] will not die under my displeasure or without receiving their sacraments, my divine Heart making itself their assured refuge at the last moment.”
On June 16, 1675 – as if to ensure that the whole Church knew what He wanted – Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary a fourth and final time. He said:
“I ask that the first Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi be dedicated as a feast to honor My Heart […] and that reparation be made to It by receiving Holy Communion on that day.”
Why receive the Eucharist on the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 27th? Because it consoles Jesus’ Sacred Heart! Jesus described most people as receiving the Eucharist with “nothing but ingratitude, irreverence, sacrilege, and coldness”! Through this devotion, we can help repair that!
