Did You See God Today?

If your house is anything like mine, dinner time can sometimes be a bit chaotic. Everyone wanting to talk and share about their day, glasses of milk being spilled and children asking for seconds before you have even had a chance to sit down and take one bite. Once in a while we are able to fit in meaningful conversation and one of the questions we like to ask is, where did you see God today. The answers range from the classmate who picked up their pencil to receiving Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

It becomes easy to go through our day, the busy or the mundane and get wrapped up in what needs to be done, what didn’t get done or what ifs about the future. We hear of breaking news, read the headlines or find ourselves doomscrolling through social media. We may have said morning prayer and an evening rosary, but did we see God’s presence in all of the hours in between. In the simple tasks or the grueling projects, the joyful moments or the heavy crosses were we aware of God with us.

Throughout Scripture God appeared and spoke to his people. In Genesis 22, God spoke to Abraham and asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac. In Exodus, God appeared to Moses as a burning bush. Later in Exodus, the Lord preceded the Israelites appearing as a column of cloud during the day and at night as a column of fire. We are reminded in 1 Kings 19 that it was not in the violent wind, the earthquake or the fire that Elijah heard the voice of God; rather it was in the still silent sound. God’s revelation culminates with the Incarnation, God becoming flesh. Christ truly man and truly God, living and breathing, teaching, calling, eating and walking with his people.

In the 17th century in a Carmelite monastery lived a lay brother, one who performed simple and humble tasks without complaining. Brother Lawrence spent most of his time in the kitchen serving his community, yet he was constantly aware of the presence of God being in continual communion with Him. One year after Brother Lawrence’s death, his spiritual writings and letters were published, The Practice of the Presence of God. The significance of his profound yet simple spirituality has impacted countless through the centuries. Pope Leo XIV has stated that this is one of the books that has most shaped his own spiritual life and helped to form him in the path for knowing and loving God.
