The Holy Father Encourages Spain to Draw Renewed Strength from the Eucharist

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Corpus Christi Mass in Madrid before a crowd of more than 1.2 million faithful, highlighting the transformative power of the Eucharist and calling Catholics to live their faith actively in the world.

Gathered in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles on the second day of his pastoral visit to Spain, the Holy Father reflected on the gift of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist. He emphasized that through the Eucharist, Jesus offers Himself as the Bread of Life, drawing believers into communion with the Father and nourishing them with divine life and love.

The Pope also praised Spain’s longstanding Corpus Christi traditions. For centuries, solemn processions, sacred art, music, and public expressions of devotion have testified to the nation’s faith in Christ’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament. These customs, he noted, are more than cultural celebrations. They remain a living profession of faith in the Risen Lord, who continues to accompany His people through every moment of history.

Reflecting on the Eucharistic procession, Pope Leo explained that Christ not only feeds His people but also goes out to meet them. The Lord walks with His Church, bringing comfort to the weak, hope to the suffering, and peace to those facing hardship. The Eucharist reminds Christians that God remains close to His people and calls them to be present to the needs of others.

The Holy Father challenged the faithful to move beyond a private or comfortable faith. Corpus Christi, he said, is an invitation to conversion and to allowing Christ’s presence to transform hearts. That transformation should lead Catholics to become builders of a more just and charitable society, committed to serving the common good.

Looking toward Spain’s future, Pope Leo encouraged the nation to ensure that its rich religious heritage remains a living source of faith rather than simply a reminder of the past. He called on Catholics to draw from the spiritual riches that have shaped the country for generations and to put that faith into practice through love of God and neighbor.

Concluding the celebration, the Pope urged the faithful to return to Christ with sincere hearts and to draw strength from the Eucharist. He reminded them that Eucharistic grace transforms believers and sends them into the world as witnesses of hope, bringing peace, justice, and charity to those they encounter. The Mass concluded with a Eucharistic procession through Madrid, featuring floral displays made from more than 30,000 flowers.
