About Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1895–1979) was one of the most influential Catholic communicators of the twentieth century. A gifted preacher, author, theologian, and broadcaster, he introduced millions of Americans to the beauty and truth of the Catholic faith through radio, television, books, and public speaking.

Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria in 1919, Archbishop Sheen earned advanced degrees in philosophy and theology and went on to teach at The Catholic University of America. His radio program, The Catholic Hour, reached millions of listeners over two decades and established him as one of the most recognizable religious voices in the nation.

In 1951, he launched Life is Worth Living, the groundbreaking television series that brought Catholic teaching into homes across America. Known for his engaging style, intellectual depth, and ability to connect faith with everyday life, Archbishop Sheen attracted audiences of all backgrounds and became one of television’s earliest and most celebrated religious personalities.

Through his ministry of preaching, teaching, and broadcasting, Archbishop Sheen’s legacy of evangelization and catechesis continues to inspire audiences around the world. Recognized by the Church for his heroic virtue, he was declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, and his beatification is scheduled for September 24, 2026.
