Pope Leo XIV celebrates the beatification of Maronite Patriarch Elias Hoayek

Pope Leo XIV praised the beatification of Blessed Elias Hoayek during his Angelus address on Sunday, asking for the new Blessed’s intercession for peace in Lebanon and for the strength of Maronite Catholics throughout the world.

Speaking from Castel Gandolfo, the Pope reflected on the life of Blessed Elias, who served as Maronite Patriarch of Antioch from 1899 to 1931 and founded the Congregation of the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family. He described the new Blessed as a dedicated shepherd whose leadership was marked by pastoral care, dialogue, and hope.

Pope Leo noted that Blessed Elias became a guiding figure not only within the Church but also in the civic life of Lebanon. His commitment to the country’s future earned him the title “Father of Greater Lebanon.” The Holy Father concluded by praying that Blessed Elias would continue to watch over Maronite faithful around the world and obtain the gift of lasting peace for the Lebanese people.

The beatification Mass took place Saturday in Dimane, the summer residence of the Maronite Patriarchate. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro presided over the liturgy as Pope Leo’s representative.

During the celebration, Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai highlighted Blessed Elias’ lifelong dedication to both the Church and the people of Lebanon. He recalled the patriarch’s efforts to care for those suffering during the famine of 1916, his defense of Lebanon’s identity at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, and his commitment to education, charitable outreach, and the renewal of the Maronite Church.

Blessed Elias leaves behind a legacy of courageous leadership rooted in faith and service. His example continues to encourage Catholics to care for those in need, strengthen the life of the Church, and work for peace and unity in Lebanon and beyond.
