At Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Leo XIV reflected on Mary’s heavenly glory as a sign of humanity’s ultimate calling: to be transformed by God’s grace and love.
Celebrating at the Pontifical Parish of Saint Thomas of Villanova in Castel Gandolfo on August 15, 2026, the Pope recalled the Church’s teaching that Mary, at the completion of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into Heaven.
True beauty comes from within
Pope Leo explained that Mary’s glorification should not be understood merely in terms of physical beauty. Rather, her incorrupt body points to the purity of her heart and soul.
“For it is the purity of the soul that, in Mary – as in us – by the grace of God, illuminates and transfigures the whole person, leading us to the glory of Heaven,” he said.
The Pope contrasted this vision with modern standards of beauty, which often emphasize youth and outward appearance. The signs of aging, he suggested, should not be hidden or feared. True beauty is revealed through enduring love, sacrifice and faithfulness.
Love offers glimpses of Heaven
Pope Leo encouraged Christians to recognize divine beauty in ordinary life: in the faces of children and elderly people, in parents returning home after a tiring day, in grandparents caring for grandchildren, and in young people courageously choosing integrity.
Such moments, he said, offer “small glimpses of heaven.”
Above all, the Pope emphasized that “love is humanity’s most beautiful adornment.” Love transforms and ennobles people, drawing them closer to God even amid life’s difficulties.
Concluding his homily, Pope Leo invited the faithful to look to Mary as their Mother, guide and companion, following her example while journeying toward the glory of Heaven.
