Pope Leo XIV expressed his gratitude to the faithful for their prayers and support during his recent hospitalization, following his discharge from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Saturday, October 17.
Speaking at the conclusion of Sunday’s Angelus, the Holy Father thanked those who had accompanied him in prayer throughout his recovery, acknowledging the encouragement he received from Catholics around the world.
He also offered special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel at Gemelli Hospital who cared for him during his five-day stay.
Recovery and Return to the Vatican
Pope Leo underwent surgery on October 13 to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung. Following the procedure, he remained hospitalized for observation and recovery.
On Saturday morning, medical examinations, including blood tests and a chest X-ray, confirmed that the Holy Father was well enough to return to the Vatican.
Before his departure, Pope Leo personally thanked his surgeon, the medical and nursing teams, hospital administrators, and representatives of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
Reflecting on his hospitalization during Sunday’s Angelus, the Pope explained that the experience had given him a greater sense of solidarity with those suffering from illness and physical weakness.
Gradual Return to Papal Duties
The Holy Father also addressed his upcoming schedule, explaining that he intends to resume his responsibilities gradually, relying on God’s assistance and the continued prayers of the faithful.
Ahead of his surgery, the Prefecture of the Papal Household had canceled all papal audiences through Tuesday, October 20, allowing the Pope additional time to recover.
As he prepares to return to his regular activities, Pope Leo continues to express his appreciation for the prayers and support offered throughout his hospitalization.
