God gives us what we need and He gives us what is good for us. And our Mother – the Blessed Mother – is often pulling the strings.
In a moment of a profound crisis of doubt – doubting if he should flee the terror of the Communists in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 – St. Josemaría, for the only time in his life, begged the Blessed Mother to provide some sign he was doing the right thing. He awoke the next morning and discovered a small gilded wooden rose on the floor next to him. And he smiled. The “mystical rose” of the forests and mountains of Rialp. The Song of Songs and the Book of Isaiah tell of a rose blooming in the desert, and in Advent we sing, “Lo, how a rose e’er blooming,” all in reference to Our Lady.
