How Can I Make a Good Confession? (The Inner Life with Patrick Conley)

Check out the full episode here!

How long has it been since your last confession? Maybe you’re holding shame inside of you for a particular sin, but you don’t have to be weighed down by it anymore! God wants to free you!

Patrick Conley and Fr. John LoCoco look at what makes a good confession, and it’s not just about feeling sorry!  Fr. John talks about how a good confession is about perfect contrition: saying sorry because you love God, not just because you’re guilty or embarrassed.

Fr. John clears up the myth that confessions are all the same. No! Some are better than others, depending on our hearts and honesty. One of the biggest things? Recognizing our sin without fear, like Peter who, after encountering Jesus, said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!”

Father explains that while feelings can come and go, a good confession is about sincerely naming your faults, having a contrite heart, and seeking to restore your relationship with God. And yes, he confirms, it’s NOT the “penalty box” ⛔️. It’s the Grace Box. ⚡️ (Great news, right?!)

Key Takeaways:

Frequency matters: The Church requires confession only once a year, but Fr. John suggests going more often, perhaps as often as you would get a haircut.

Grave vs. Venial Sins: If you commit a mortal sin, don’t wait. Go! Even venial sins can start piling up and make you feel spiritually sluggish, like Patrick mentions. Clean up that spiritual ickiness with regular confession!

Don’t tell a life story: When confessing, keep it concise and honest; list your sins. You don’t need a backstory for each one! Father can ask for clarification if needed.

Fr. John also drops a helpful tip: Start your confession with, “I accuse myself of the following sins…” Put the power in your hands, not the devil’s.

Examination of Conscience? Fr. John encourages to reflect on your relationship with God, family, neighbor, and self. If you forget something? The priest will help guide you. It’s good to share your state of life, like whether you’re single, married, or in a religious vocation.

Feeling nervous? Just do it! Fr. John reassures us: “The Lord’s love is coming for you in that sacrament.” If it’s been a while, take this as your sign to run to the confessional. 😇
