A Heavenly Bouquet: Pope Leo XIV, St. Thérèse, and the Power of Roses

In a recent episode of Morning Air, John Morales and Fr. James Kubicki explored the powerful connections between St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Pope Francis, and the newly elected Pope Leo XIV. The common thread? A single white rose — a symbol of faith, prayer, and heavenly intercession.

Known as the “Little Flower,” St. Thérèse of Lisieux once promised, “I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth. I will let fall a shower of roses.” Over the years, many Catholics, including Pope Francis, have reported receiving roses after seeking her intercession. Pope Francis openly shared how Thérèse often responded to his prayers with roses appearing in unexpected ways, a sign of heavenly support.

During a recent visit to the tomb of Pope Francis at St. Mary Major, Pope Leo XIV left a single white rose. The simple gesture was laden with spiritual meaning, linking the late Pope’s devotion to St. Thérèse and Leo XIV’s emerging papal mission. Pope Francis, who frequently asked Thérèse for roses as signs of answered prayers, seemed to receive one last “rose delivery” from the new Pope, a sign of continuity and spiritual communion.

Fr. Kubicki also highlighted the profound moment when Pope Leo XIII was approached by a young Thérèse in Rome, who requested early entry into the Carmelite convent. Though he did not grant immediate permission, his words, “If God wills it, it will happen,” became a pivotal moment in her spiritual journey.

Fr. Kubicki noted that before his death, Pope Leo XIII declared that his greatest act was consecrating the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1899. With Pope Leo XIV taking the name of this iconic Pope, there is growing hope that he will renew or extend this powerful devotion, emphasizing prayer, penance, and trust in Christ’s mercy.

In this episode, we’re reminded that the saints, the popes, and the faithful are all part of one great communion, connected through prayer, devotion, and the simple yet profound symbol of a rose.
