“You know well enough that Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions, nor even at their difficulty, but at the love with which we do them.” -St. Thérèse of Lisieux
We are all, in our own unique ways, called to walk in the footsteps of Christ. Some of us are called to follow Him through missionary work in far away places. Others are called to enter the religious life and serve that way. Some will even be called to give their lives for Christ as martyrs.
However, most of us will not be asked to give witness to Our Lord through such extraordinary means. Most of us are called to serve Our Lord through the ordinary, through the little things, through our everyday interactions with the people around us. Our apostolate may not reach foreign lands, but we can do just as much good by reaching wandering hearts.
In 1928, St. Josemaría Escrivá founded Opus Dei, a prelature focused on the idea that all Christians could seek and attain personal holiness through their work, relationships, and daily duties. Prior to Opus Dei, many Catholics still operated under the assumption that striving for sainthood through a robust spiritual life was reserved for the religious.
“You have the obligation to sanctify yourself. Even you, who thinks that this is the exclusive task of priests and religious orders. To all, without exception, the Lord said ‘Be perfect, as my heavenly Father is perfect.’” (The Way, no. 291)
Many other saints championed this idea, including St. Thérèse of Lisieux and St. Francis de Sales, who both emphasized the integration of spiritual practice with daily life. And there are few greater examples of serving Christ with profound love in the quiet ordinariness of life than St. Joseph. The foster father of Jesus doesn’t utter a single word in the gospels and yet, he demonstrates the apotheosis of quiet humility, fidelity, consistency, and trust in God.
When we die, God will not ask us about the magnitude of our deeds nor the profoundness of our stations in life. He will ask us if we loved Him. In our actions, in our thoughts, in our words, did we love Him? Did we love our friends, our family members, our coworkers, our enemies? Did we live our ordinary lives extraordinarily?
