Meeting Between Holy Father and Secretary of State Marco Rubio Set for May 7th

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to receive United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 7th at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, continuing a growing pattern of dialogue between the Holy See and American leadership.

This encounter follows earlier meetings between the Holy Father and Secretary Rubio, reflecting an ongoing relationship marked by diplomatic engagement and mutual interest in global affairs. The two previously met on May 18th of last year after the Mass that formally inaugurated Pope Leo XIV’s Petrine ministry. That historic liturgy drew leaders from around the world, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who also greeted the newly elected Pope on that occasion.

The following day, May 19, 2025, Pope Leo XIV held a more formal meeting with both Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio. That discussion signaled an early commitment by the new pontificate to engage with civil authorities, particularly those representing nations with longstanding ties to the Church. As the first American-born Pope, Leo XIV’s interactions with U.S. officials carry a distinct significance, offering opportunities for collaboration on issues that affect both the Church and the global community.

While the specific agenda for the May 7 meeting has not been publicly disclosed, such encounters traditionally include discussions on international peace, humanitarian concerns, religious freedom, and the moral dimensions of political leadership. The Holy See has long emphasized the importance of dialogue rooted in the dignity of the human person, encouraging leaders to pursue policies that uphold life, promote justice, and foster authentic peace among nations.

Earlier that same morning, Pope Leo XIV will meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This sequence of audiences underscores the Vatican’s role as a center of diplomatic and spiritual outreach, where leaders from across the world are received not only as representatives of their nations, but as participants in a broader conversation about the common good.

Such meetings are a visible expression of the Church’s mission in the public square. The Successor of Peter, while primarily a shepherd of souls, also serves as a moral voice among the nations. In welcoming civil leaders, the Holy Father continues a tradition of engagement that seeks to bridge political realities with the enduring truths of the Gospel.

For Catholics, these moments invite prayer for wisdom and prudence among those entrusted with authority. As Pope Leo XIV meets with Secretary Rubio and Prime Minister Tusk, the faithful are reminded of the Church’s call to be present in the world, offering clarity, charity, and a steadfast commitment to the dignity of every human life.
