Two Spiritual Treasures to Take Wherever You Go

With the demands of daily life, it can be difficult to stay connected with Our Lord and the Catholic faith. Even when we have the desire to pray our daily Rosary or spend time with Scripture, some days the needs of those right in front of us make that impossible. Fortunately, there are some supernatural treasures that we can take along with us no matter where we are or what we’re doing.

Catechist and author Lisa Mladinich stopped by Morning Air®  to share what these treasures are, and how they can improve our spiritual life.

The Sign of the Cross

“When you make the Sign of the Cross, arm yourself with a saintly boldness, and reinstall your soul in its bold liberty. For you are not ignorant that the Cross is a prize beyond price.” – St. John Chrysostom

We begin and end each prayer with the Sign of the Cross, but when it becomes so routine we can forget the power that this supernatural treasure holds.

“It’s something we do almost as if we are flapping our hands in the wind,” Mladinich said. “We forget that it’s a spiritual treasure. There is so much more to it … it is so powerful.”

Mladinich quoted Catholic author Bert Ghezzi to illustrate what it means when we make the Sign of the Cross. Ghezzi said, “The sign of the Cross is the center of our lives. It is a renewal of baptism, a mark of discipleship, an acceptance of suffering, a defense against the devil, and victory over self-indulgence.”

Not only is the Sign of the Cross powerful, but it can be employed no matter where you are! “Whenever I feel anxious, I do a nice, reverent Sign of the Cross,” Mladinich said. “In that signing of the Cross we are drawing in to God’s presence, and we’re calling on His name. When you call on someone’s name in the Bible you are calling them into your presence.”

Your Guardian Angel

…Ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.

While the Guardian Angel Prayer may be considered more of a children’s prayer, we should all take the opportunity to talk to our guardian angels throughout our lives.

“Every angel is pure spirit, and every one is completely individual,” Mladinich said, “They are persons – each one is a unique spirit. These are pure, holy, warrior spirits. I don’t mean that they are war-like, they are peaceful, beautiful, and they behold the presence of God. But they are with you as protectors and guides all throughout your life. From the moment of your birth until you enter heaven that angel does not leave your side.”

That means that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you can call on your guardian angel for help, guidance, or encouragement.

“When you say your Guardian Angel Prayer, you are inviting your angel along,” said Mladinich. “And that angel is also a messenger of God, and speaks words of encouragement into your soul as you fight against your sins. When you encounter discouragement, you can have that conversation with your guardian angel.”
