Introducing Your Children to Sacred Scripture

The Holy Bible is packed full of inspiring and illuminating lessons and messages—even for adults it can be a lot to digest. So as parents and grandparents, how can we introduce our kids to the Word of God? Where should we begin? Katie Warner, author of “The Word of the Lord: A Child’s First Scripture Verses”, joined Morning Air® on Relevant Radio® to discuss Scripture for children.

Katie has fond memories of cuddling with her mother and reading her children’s Bible. “I remember being really little and knowing that reading the Bible was something that we did as a family, something that was an important habit that Catholics do,” she said.

mom and dad read Bible with daughterShe encourages parents to start with verses that resonate with young children and are easy for them to understand. It’s also helpful to associate that verse with something they understand.

These verses might be a good place to start:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.” Exodus 20:12
“That’s something that kids can relate to because they’re so used to mom and dad talking about the importance of obedience and listening. They’re able to see, hey even the Bible tells us that it’s really valuable to honor mom and dad and that blesses us,” said Warner.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5
By thinking of a pregnant mommy with a baby in her womb, kids can “feel the immense love between both the mother and baby, but also the immense love that God has for them. My kids just love that comforting knowledge of knowing that before they were even in mommy’s tummy that God knew them and wanted to create them and had a plan for their lives.”

“Love is patient, love is kind.” 1 Corinthians 13:4
This is a great verse to reflect on marriage, especially the marriage of their mommy and daddy. “They get to talk about when mommy and daddy were in front of the altar and exchanging vows before God. And that was the beginning of our family! And that’s such a special thing for them to see these Bible verses, these real words of Scripture come to life for them and be so relevant and applicable to what they’re going through as little kids,” said Warner.
