Encountering Angels

Today is the Feast of the Guardian Angels, and while the Bible tells of times when angels interacted with the physical world, it doesn’t happen very often. But, whether we see them or not, angels are always with us, protecting and guiding us.

Father John Gordon, of the Archdiocese of Newark, stopped by Morning Air® to discuss times when we do experience angels, and how an encounter with an angel is a gift from the Lord.

“I really think sometimes that the angels do come, and they express something of God’s tenderness and care for us,” Fr. Gordon said. “As you read in Scripture, the angel is somehow a representative of God Himself. And in so doing, God is breaking through and saying, ‘I am with you.’ … It is the sense that I’m not alone. God is helping me.”

Listeners were invited to call in and share their stories of encountering angels, and they showed that an experience with an angel can look very different, but they make a profound impact. Here are just a few of the stories that were shared:

Mary in Freedom, Wisconsin: It was just so miraculous. My mother called me to come back to her home. It’s within 10 minutes of my house so I always pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet  during that time. And all of a sudden I heard the word ‘fear’ come into my mind. And then it said, ‘You need to pay attention.’ And, not being very bright, I turned my head. When I looked back there were three deer in front of my car and one buck coming straight at me that was already in the road.

There was absolutely nothing I could do. I was going 55 mph. And all of a sudden, the buck that’s in the road, it turned and went. I watched it in my rear-view mirror and it went behind my car and then went in the ditch. The three deer in the front of my car that I should have hit at least two of them dead on – I never hit them. Not even a bump, not nothing. They were within a foot or two of the front of my car and I never hit them.

Joanna in Jacksonville, FL: When I was a child I lived around the corner from a fire station in Brooklyn, New York. One day I was crossing the street to the public high school across the street, and as I went to cross the fire engine came screaming down the road. And I was pushed! I was pushed away from the fire truck, which of course would have taken my life. I must have been about 5 or 6 year old, and brought up in a very, very faithful home, and I believe that was my guardian angel. It saved my life. And I think about that often, believe it or not, every time I hear a fire truck.

Jim in Madison, Wisconsin: For me it has been praying the Chaplet of St. Michael. Ever since I began doing that I was making more spiritual progress over things I would repeatedly need to confess. I don’t feel like I suddenly had matured, but suddenly a lot of temptations, temper, all sorts of thing just started to dissipate. I’m confident that the angels can see the sources of temptations, the evil in the spiritual realm. But a substantial decrease in temptation by praying the Chaplet to St. Michael.
