The Story of the Miraculous Medal

The Medal of the Immaculate Conception (commonly known as the Miraculous Medal) was designed by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. Millions around the world wear the Miraculous Medal and call upon the Mother of God’s intercession in their daily lives.

At just nine years old, St. Catherine Laboure’s mother died. After the burial, she embraced a statue of the Blessed Mother, saying “now you will be my mother.” At the age of 24, the Virgin Mary appeared to Catherine and showed her the design for the Miraculous Medal. She told her to have a medal made with the image.

The front side of the Miraculous Medal features an image Mary standing upon the globe and crushing the head of the serpent beneath her feet. The back of the medal shows an M with a cross arising from it, surrounded by twelve stars and below, the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

“Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck,” Mary said to Catherine.

The graces Our Lady promised came to fruition for many who wore the medal, and the devotion grew. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception points us to the altar where we might encounter her Son and his loving mercy.
