Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize

How often do you ponder the glory of heaven? Do you think about who you’d like to be reunited with one day or who you’d like to meet when you arrive? Do you consider the indescribable splendor of being in God’s presence, where no evil or pain exists?

Fr. James Kubicki, Jesuit priest and regular contributor to Morning Air® on Relevant Radio®, says that it’s important to take a little time to think about our ultimate goal: eternal life with God.

“Christ opened the path to us. He is like a roped guide climbing a mountain who, on reaching the summit, pulls us up to him and leads us to God. If we entrust our life to him, if we let ourselves be guided by him, we are certain to be in safe hands, in the hands of our Savior,” said Pope Francis.

Fr. Kubicki explained, “I like that image of mountain climbing. Because so often on earth, life is a struggle. It’s a struggle to stay on the right path and to keep moving forward, keep heading toward our goal in life which is heaven, to be with Christ forever in heaven.

Worried that your head will be stuck in the clouds? Fr. Kubicki challenges you to visualize your destination without losing sight of your current surroundings.

“And that doesn’t distract us from life here on earth. Just like any good GPS or trip that we’re taking, we need to know where our destination is but we also need to know the right path, the right route to follow. And … he is the way; he shows us the way. But I think it’s good for us to reflect a little bit on our ultimate goal which is heaven,” he said.

A juvenile idea of heaven is often portrayed in movies or cartoons, but the reality of heaven goes much deeper than cherubs sitting atop fluffy clouds. When we dig further into the pure joy and peace of paradise, we may find motivation for our journey. Knowing what awaits us can help us through the trials and difficulties we face in this earthly life.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs it the kingdom of heaven.
