Knights of Columbus Pray Novena for Unity and End to Racism

Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds. – William Shakespeare

Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, told Drew Mariani, “Racism has been festering the lily of America for hundreds of years. It’s got to end; it’s got to stop.”

How is this going to happen? “We need strong laws—they need to be vigorously enforced. But we have laws, and what we’ve got to do is change hearts. And the way you change hearts is by prayer and by the witness of Christians who have the courage to stand up,” said Anderson.

When we respond to injustice and hatred and violence with more injustice, hatred, and violence, nothing ever changes. “The answer to violence is love and reconciliation. And you’ve got to be very strong to do that. And where comes that strength but from prayer and from the grace of God?” Anderson explained.

In that spirit, the Knights of Columbus have begun a Novena for National Unity and an End to Racism, which began on June 7 and goes through June 15.

“Pour your love into our hearts, that we may speak the truth boldly and in a spirit of charity, and labor unceasingly for justice, peace and reconciliation in our divided nation and world,” says the novena prayer.

Now, more than ever, our nation needs Christians to courageously stand up for peace, justice, and love.
