The Waltons: Patrick Madrid Talks with Mary McDonough

Do you remember The Waltons? Patrick Madrid has a love for this wholesome show from his childhood. He recently had a conversation with actress Mary McDonough who played Erin on The Waltons, an American television series that aired from 1972-1981. The Waltons told the story of a Virginian family—their struggles, love, and life experiences—in the 1930s and 40s during the Great Depression and World War II.

Patrick says that he watched this show as it first aired when he was 12 years old through young adulthood. He recently rediscovered the show when he found it on a streaming site. “Now that I’m a father and a grandfather and I’m sitting on the couch watching this show, I’m seeing it from a different perspective. I’m understanding some of the subtleties that I didn’t pick up on when I was a teenager,” he explained.

He later sat down to watch some episodes with his young grandchildren, who at first were hesitant to watch this classic show, but were quickly glued to the screen and invested in the lives of the characters.

Hearing Patrick speak about The Waltons on The Patrick Madrid Show was the aunt of cast member Mary McDonough. Through this connection, Mary reached out to Patrick with an email. To unpack the depth of the series, Patrick had an engaging conversation with Mary about her time on the show.
