Today, as we remember the 117 Vietnamese martyrs of the 19th century, we look to the words of Cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan who was himself a prisoner in Vietnam. As he struggled to find peace he realized that though he could not continue his work as a bishop as he was ordained, he could minister to the poor despairing miserable brothers who were imprisoned with him.
