Today we celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. This Basilica is the official cathedral of the Pope. Shortly after Pope Benedict XVI was elected, he went to his cathedral to talk about his chair which is there. He explained that this chair is a symbol of a bishop’s teaching authority and for the bishop of Rome, the Pope, this is an authority over the entire Church.
