The Litany of Humility: Cultivating the Mother of All Virtues

If pride is the mother of all vices, then humility may be the mother of all virtues. It’s not an easy virtue to cultivate, especially if you are someone who craves attention, praise, and being the best.

When you’re hoping to cultivate the virtue of humility, the Litany of Humility may be a good devotion to take up. But be warned—this litany is not for the faint of heart.

“You can go walking on a trail or you can go up Mount Everest, and I think that’s a Mount Everest litany,” said Fr. Marcel Taillon about the Litany of Humility.

It takes a lot of humility to be open to praying this litany. “As the Litany of Humility goes on, you really see this crystal clear examination of your conscience,” reflected John Harper.

The litany not only asks for humility to increase, but for our acceptance of suffering to increase as well. It’s extraordinarily challenging to pray and reflect on our failings and the pride we hold onto in ways we might not have realized.

So if you’re feeling extra hardcore today, pray the Litany of Humility.

Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …
That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I go unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…
