Perhaps one of the most difficult things about our Faith is the fact that some things are impossible to explain and understand. When we consider the nature of almighty God, some things are simply beyond our limited human comprehension. And sooner or later, each of us has questions to which there are no answers.
8-year-old Emma called The Patrick Madrid Show from California to ask one of the big ones that just about every Christian has pondered—if God created everything, who created God?
Our concept of time and space is extremely limited by our experience here on earth where everything has a beginning and an end. But Patrick explained to Emma, no one created God.
“God has always existed. And I know that’s a very hard thing for us to understand—it’s hard for me to understand. But God has always existed, He always will exist.”
The reason it’s so hard for us to understand is because we think of things in terms of time that passes in a predictable fashion.
“He always has existed because He’s outside of time. We’re inside of time. You know how you remember yesterday, and you think about what it will be like tomorrow, and you know what it’s like right now?” he asked Emma.
“Yes,” she agreed.
“That’s because we’re in time. So for God, He’s outside of time. So for Him, there is no yesterday or tomorrow, there’s always just now,” Patrick explained.
He offered an analogy that might help Emma to understand. The last car of a train—the caboose—moves only because it is connected to the car in front of it. The car in front of that moves only because it is pulled by the car ahead of it.
“Imagine that there were a hundred of those train cars and that’s all there were … and if the very front one was just another train car, how could any of those train cars move? They couldn’t move, could they, unless there was an engine at the front of the train? So if you think about that, what you’ll see is that in order for all of those train cars to move they have to be hooked up to something at the very front of it which is pulling everything. And that train engine is kind of like God in the sense that if God was not there, if God doesn’t exist, then all of these other things in the world … wouldn’t exist. But they do because God has always existed.”
