The Spiritual Significance of Making Your Bed

What’s the first thing you do when your alarm goes off in the morning? Do you hit the snooze button? Do you check your phone? Or do you get out of bed, say a morning offering, and make your bed?

Recently on The Cale Clarke Show, Cale talked about the spiritual and psychological significance of making your bed every morning and the benefits it can provide to you everyday.  Recalling Admiral McRaven’s commencement speech to the University of Texas at Austin’s Class of 2014, Cale played a portion of the audio. “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day.  It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task…and another…and another. And by the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. And if you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right.”

Both Cale and Lucas admitted that it’s a difficult thing to do and they themselves fail to complete this task more often than not. Of course, the moment after waking up is often the most difficult time to do things that we don’t want to do, but that’s exactly why making your bed is so important.  It is a relatively easy task, but the struggle to form a habit out of it is so beneficial because of the sacrifice our minds are telling our bodies to make.

Cale went on to bring up Fr. Connor Danstrom’s thoughts on the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics: As time goes on and matter changes, entropy (chaos) increases.  We are all going to die.  Everybody we know will die. Most of us will be forgotten by the world.  But what does this have to do with making your bed? Well, if chaos is steadily increasing, what are we doing to bring order, and thereby God, into our lives?

“Have you ever had the thought, ‘Why make my bed? Why bother? I’m just going to sleep in it again anyways tonight.’ You may as well say, ‘Why take a shower? I’m just going to go get smelly and sweaty again?’” These thoughts breed spiritual laziness and compound the chaos that is already rising in our world.  A great way to take back control of your life is to bring God into it in little ways.  We cannot control very much, but we can make our beds. “So if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” (Admiral William McRaven)
