Preparing for a Peaceful Death with St. Joseph

In this month of the Holy Souls, as we pray for the faithful departed, we would be remiss if we did not also consider our own death. We probably all agree that a peaceful death is the ideal situation. Who better to turn to for help than Saint Joseph, the patron of departing souls and a peaceful death?

Why is St. Joseph the patron of a peaceful death? It is said that at the end of his life Joseph died peacefully at his home in Nazareth and was lovingly cared for at the hour of his death by his spouse, the Virgin Mary, and foster son Jesus Christ.

As the Novena to St. Joseph states: “Be my guide, my father, and my model through life that I may die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.”

What better way to depart from this world than surrounded by Jesus and His Mother? I can think of nothing greater. So if you, too, desire a peaceful death, become friends with Joseph!

The first step on your to-do list is to gain and maintain a state of grace for your soul. Make a good Confession frequently and receive the sacraments regularly, detach yourself from sin and live a life pleasing to God.

And then, for bonus points, grow in your relationship with St. Joseph. It is said that St. Joseph will intercede on the behalf of those who have a devotion to him for a peaceful end to their earthly life. Here’s a beautiful prayer to request this intercession from him:

Prayer to St. Joseph for a Happy Death

O Blessed Joseph, you gave your last breath in the loving embrace of Jesus and Mary. When the seal of death shall close my life, come with Jesus and Mary to aid me. Obtain for me this solace for that hour – to die with their holy arms around me. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I commend my soul, living and dying, into your sacred arms. Amen.

Can you imagine dying in the arms of Mary and seeing her face smiling down at you? What a beautiful moment!
