Equip Your Prayer Life

It was in the early years of our marriage that my husband and I struggled with infertility and grieved the loss of several babies to miscarriage. As heavy as the cross was to carry and at moments even difficult for me to pray, we found ourselves constantly praying the 54-Day Rosary Novena.  One after another, we would just start again asking for Our Lady’s intercession, guidance and discernment.  It was through this devotion to the holy Rosary that we found comfort, peace and hope.

Now, six kids later our evening Rosary looks a little different as we try to gather everyone together after dinner. The one-year-old is usually running laps around the living room while singing and dancing. The four-year-old is filled with questions while reading her Bible story. The six-year-old is practicing chant when leading a mystery. If you had a bird’s eye view, you would see our family Rosary is anything from perfect. Thankfully, God doesn’t ask for perfection instead he asks for faithfulness.

While the Rosary may seem monotonous and repetitive in its form, it is a meditation on the life of Christ through the eyes of Our Lady. We journey through the birth of Jesus and his childhood, his public ministry, his sorrowful passion and the glory and promise of the Resurrection. Pope Paul VI is noted as saying, “When we pray the Rosary we can experience the key moments of the Gospel.”  St. John Paul II commented, “The Rosary is a prayer both so humble and simple and a theologically rich in Biblical content. I beg you to pray it.”

It is believed that Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1214 and gave him the Rosary. Years later, the mysteries were introduced, the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. In 2002, St. John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries. Many popes and saints have commented on the power and efficacy in reciting the Rosary. In several Marian apparitions, Our Lady herself has asked for the praying of the Rosary. She has asked to pray the rosary for peace, for our pope, bishops and priests, for repentance, for refuge.
